Rotary Club of Orleans donate books and technical supplies to Dominican schools

The president of the Rotary Club of Dominica, Marvlyn Birmingham and president of the Rotary club of Orleans, Julia Ginley, have collaborated on a project for the second consecutive year, this time to donate books to several schools and organizations across the island.The Rotary Club of Orleans in Ottawa, Canada, has chosen Dominica as a focus for its international service projects. In March 2011, with the support of the Rotary Club of Dominica, the Rotary Club of Orleans (RCO) provided the Alpha Centre with books, equipment and school supplies, as well as library tools and resources valued at over $15, 000 US. These books and resources contained many tools to assist in the development of Autistic children. The club also arranged for experts from the Children’s Hospital to train parents and teachers of autistic children and provide a seminar for over 70 healthcare professionals.This year the Rotary Club of Orleans, through donations from the Ottawa Roman Catholic School Board, Fabricland Orleans and private donors has shipped 208 boxes of books and teaching supplies, including sewing material and notions. With the help of the Rotary Club of Dominica and the Alpha Centre, Rotary Club of Orleans Rotarian Carmen Larsen-Grijalva has been leading the distribution of these supplies to a multitude of institutions across Dominica have received and will benefit from these goods.They include;• The Alpha Centre in Goodwill• The Insulukati School in the Kalinago Territory• The Salybia Primary School in the Kalinago Territory• The Dominica Red Cross in Roseau• The Caribbean HIV&AIDS Alliance in Roseau• The Old Mill Cultural Centre’s Art Institute• The Alliance Francais in Roseau• The Pioneer Preparatory School in Checkhall, Massacre• Alcoholics Anonymous Dominica in Roseau• The Dominica Grammar School in Roseau• The St. Luke’s Primary School in Pointe Michel• The House of Hope in Delices• The Laudat Primary School• The Coulibistrie Primary School• The Public Library• The Delices Primary School• The St. Martin’s Secondary School in Roseau and• The Morne Prosper Primary SchoolThe clubs anticipate that through these institutions, many other people will benefit.The Alpha Centre hopes to start an after school remedial program with the academic books that it has received.The fabric and sewing notions that were sent will be used in the sewing programs of both the Alpha Centre and the Insulukati School.Both of these schools received three sewing machines last year thanks to the Rotary Club of Dominica and the Rotary Club of Orleans respectively.Librarian at the Public Library, Davina Jones wrote a thank you note to the Rotary Club stating; “Let me assure you that your generosity will greatly assist the Public Library’s goal of providing information and leisure material for readers as well as helping in Dominica’s economic development”.The Clubs are grateful to several organizations that made this donation possible, in particular, the Venezuela Embassy and Ambassador Carmen Grijalva for providing transportation and assistance in sorting and delivering the items, Pedro Jose Grijalva, Vice President Rotary Alto Prado in Caracas, Comfortel de Champ, Fort Young Hotel and the Alpha Centre.Photographs compliments Rotary Club of Orleans member, Carmen Larsen-Grijalva.
