Attorney general is a partisan politician

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion I find ironic the article in The Daily Gazette outlining New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s ongoing battles with Trump administration policies. I believe that the people of New York really need to see the AG of our state in terms of what he really is — a partisan Democrat who finds fault with everything the Republicans and the Trump administration does. He sues for the funds being withheld to so-called sanctuary cites in New York that don’t comply with ICE protocols. He treats the illegal immigrants better in New York than the tax-paying citizens of our state. He is always looking to make the news or on TV fighting all and everything Republican or that isn’t Democratic in the state. You must wonder Mr. Schneiderman was when Dean Skelos, Sheldon Silver, Sen. John Samson, Vito Lopez and so many other Democrats were stealing from the people of New York right under his nose. Funny how he never saw or commented on any of those crimes. If that’s not a partisan attorney general from New York state, I guess we all live in a fish bowl.Rick SplawnikAmsterdamMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?EDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationlast_img read more

Poll finds 87% support for culling pokies in poor areas

first_imgNZ Herald 4 March 2013Nine out of every 10 people in Auckland want cuts to the number of poker machines in the poorest and most vulnerable parts of the city. A Curia poll found support from 87 per cent of respondents as lawmakers prepare to set new rules governing the availability of poker machines. The “No More Pokies” coalition of 20 community organisations delivered 9061 submissions to Auckland Council on the final day last week of public consultation over the first city-wide gambling policy. It aims to set policies for non-casino pokie venues, with 4069 gambling machines in pubs and clubs across the city. Local governments are obliged by law to set policies and the new policy was the first chance to have a unified approach across Auckland.…. Problem Gambling Foundation national health manager Tony Milne said a sinking-lid policy would stop licences to run pokies being transferred from bars and clubs which closed. “The most powerful submissions come from people who have experienced the harm from pokie machines with accounts of lives … torn apart by pokie machines.” Family First director Bob McCoskrie released a poll last week showing huge support for cuts to pokies in the city’s poorest areas. Those polled reflected voting percentages in the 2011 election but showed a broad support for cuts to pokies in the city’s poorest areas.http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10868964last_img read more

Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Man in Father’s Boca Raton Killing

first_imgState prosecutors have announced they are seeking the death penalty against a man accused of stabbing and strangling his father while he was sleeping in a Boca Raton parking garage last month.A notice of intent to seek the death penalty against Jared Noiman was filed Thursday. The police report states that Noiman was “covered in blood” when officers stopped him in Delray Beach several hours after the murder. He “claimed to have been in an altercation in Boca Raton.”The document continues, “Noiman would not elaborate on who was involved in the altercation and did not wish to report a crime.”He was subsequently arrested on a charge of driving without a license and taken into custody. Investigators said at the time there was no probable cause to charge him with the killing. However, Noiman went to the Boca Raton Police Department the next day and confessed to killing his father.“He said the two lived together out of his father’s vehicle and they slept in the parking garage at One Ocean Plaza,” according to police. “Noiman said he did not like the way his father treated him and he started having thoughts about killing him. Noiman continued his statement with a detailed description of how he stabbed his father and then strangled him while he was sleeping in the parking garage.”The notice of intent cites the crime as being “especially heinous, atrocious and cruel.”Read the notice of intent here:last_img read more

Tour de France 2019: Julian Alaphilippe learning on the job as he defends lead

first_imgHaving never seriously contended for a Grand Tour GC title, the Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider is working hard to ensure his tactics are right going forward as the race heads to its conclusion Sunday.”I don’t know if it’s realistic [to win the GC] because I don’t ask myself that question,” he told a news conference. “I just continue to do like I did the last two weeks, take it day after day and enjoy it. Related News Tour de France 2019: Simon Yates climbs to second stage win, Geraint Thomas reduces Julian Alaphilippe’s lead Julian Alaphilippe acknowledges he has altered his approach to “ride like the leader” at the Tour de France as he adjusts to defending the yellow jersey.Home hopeful Alaphilippe leads the General Classification heading into the final week, but his lead over defending champion Geraint Thomas was cut to a minute and 35 seconds as he was dropped late Sunday. “It’s a really big honor to be in yellow during the Tour. We changed the plan and [try to] defend it. I give everything every day, as you see, and I don’t go in a breakaway now. I ride like the leader of the Tour de France.Prêt pour tout donner dans les Alpes ! They did a great job again [on Sunday]. I am looking forward to start the next week.” Acknowledging his lack of experience in such scenarios, Alaphilippe added: “When you have the yellow jersey on your shoulder, you have to defend it.”And to defend it, you have to stay calm, stay with the GC riders, and that is something I have never done before. It’s a big change for me, maybe I made a mistake to follow my instinct on the final climb [Sunday].”That is something you don’t do when you have a lot of experience and I will learn from that. I think I learned already after the finishing line.”last_img read more
